Review | Biore Sarasara UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ PA+++

Over the years I've come to the conclusion that Asian skincare brands are eons ahead of the US in the sunscreen game. The amount of consumer leverage Asians have in the anti-aging, anti-UV, anti-tanning has forced skincare companies in the East to innovate past the mediocre. The result? Lightweight, effortless sunscreen. Ah the power of competition!

Heaven knows I've tried my share of sunscreens. Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch sunscreen somehow has the ability of making my skin a paradox of dry and greasy at the same time, making the skin under my chin flake and the center of my forehead shine. Aveeno Active Naturals Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion turns me into a  disco ball. And I hate the feel of sunscreen.

Enter Biore Sarasara UV Aqua Rich Waterly Essence Sunscreen. I had mine shipped straight from Japan on Amazon, and it's exactly what it sounds like: a sunscreen that is watery. It has the consistency of a gel moisturizer and goes on super smooth and easy. No more white cast and greasy face. The light texture putting the recommended teaspoon of sunscreen on my face easy.

QUICK TIP: two finger-lengths (index and middle) of sunscreen is generally going to be the right amount for your face and neck. I usually go for one finger if I'm indoors most of the day, two if I'm going to be outside for more than two hours.

Pros:

  • Great sunscreen coverage. It has SPF 50 (for UVB rays) and PA+++ (for UVA, which is of a PA scale from one "+" to three).
  • Light, gel-like texture. Seriously feels like water.
  • Great for putting on over your moisturizer. (PSA: Do not mix your moisturizer and sunscreen! Layer, layer, layer.)
  • Doesn't make your foundation ball up.
  • No heavy scent. Smells like a light, light citrus.

Cons:

  • Does contain alcohol, and therefore can be drying. My skin is quite sensitive, but I've had no adverse reactions so far. Make sure you have a good moisturizer underneath. I have been using CeraVe Moisturizing Cream and so far so good. Really recommend it.
  • Chemical Sunscreen. Please be aware of this. Some people can be allergic to chemical sunscreens. Also, chemical sunscreen require reapplication every three or so hours.
  • Not enough coverage/lasting power for a day out on the beach. Use a physical sunscreen for that!
  • $12, give or take. At 50g of product, not exactly a bargain buy.

Ingredients:

Water, Alcohol, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Lauryl Methacrylate/Sodium Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Dimethicone, Acrylates/C10-30 Acrylate Crosspolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, Agar, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Sodium Hyaluronate, [grapefruit, lemon & Orange extract] Citrus Grandis, Citrus Medica Limonum, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis, Xylitol, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Fragrance

Final Thoughts:

I honestly can't say enough good things about this sunscreen. Such a great product for everyday. UVA rays are honestly the main cause of premature aging in the skin. Invest in a quality sunscreen that you will USE. This is a great start for anyone who resents putting on western brands of thick, heavy sunscreen in the morning.

Anyone else tried this? What are your thoughts?
